I'll repeat this tomorrow going to & from work. No signs of any leaks appeared in the areas that I cleaned off either. Coming back from work with a fresh bit of the cardboard underneath the pump, I didn't get the smell and no new stain appeared on the cardboard. I noticed the smell after getting off the highway in the morning too. After driving to work (about 50 miles), the cardboard looked like it had just a slight stain, possibly just from the de-greaser. I also stuck a piece of cardboard bent into a "U" shape under/around the vacuum pump to see if it collected anything. Well, I sprayed the whole area down with a de-greaser this morning and wiped the vacuum pump, valve cover, and valve cover-to-head flange down to clean things up this morning. Has anyone experienced something like this? Are there any oil sources that I'm forgetting? I can't think of any other oil source in back of the engine that could make its way to the exhaust. It seems that it could only be from the valve cover gasket, oil lines to the turbo, or potentially the transmission output seals. My hypothesis is that the turbo, catalyst and exhaust are getting nice and toasty on the highway, and when I pull off there is some oil leak or oil being thrown by a belt, driveshaft etc that burns off on the hot exhaust, and I can only smell it when the exhaust is still hot enough and the air around the car is suddenly still. The past few days, I've pulled off of the road right after getting off the highway and popped the hood, but could see no signs of an oil leak or smoke, nor could I smell it outside the car. At first I thought it was diesel exhaust - it wasn't too strong and wasn't accompanied by any smoke, but it occurs too frequently and repeatably to be pulling up behind a diesel vehicle right after getting off of the highway. ![]() The past two weeks, I've started to notice a faint burning oil smell getting into the cabin only after getting off of the highway. ![]() ![]() Here are just a couple of practical uses of mind maps: What’s great about mind maps is that they are very flexible and can be used in a variety of ways. With a mind map, scattered thoughts begin to solidify before my eyes. In our opinion, Brett Terpstra encapsulates this concept perfectly: The advantage of mind mapping is that it enables you to make connections you might not normally see in a traditional outline by allowing you to see the big picture. (A mind map is) visually looking at ideas and their connections and relationships with each other. We really like this definition of a mind map by David Sparks (aka MacSparky) from a Mac Power Users episode on Cooking Ideas: It allows any idea to be connected with another at any time, and helps you see connections that you wouldn’t have otherwise. Think of it as the right-brained version of a standard outline that is perfect for “radiant thinking,” an idea popularized by Tony Buzan. The basic idea is that you start with a central idea and build branches (or “nodes”) around it. A livery editor lets you customize the designs of your favorite cars, and drivers can play through Seasons for those longer sessions. With those strong reservations in mind, WRC 10 does have its fair share of content. However, considering the concentration required to actually play the thing, a focus on visuals completely fades away, and it’s likely not something fans of the series are all too fussed with. With some truly abject landscapes, the game regularly has the vibe of an arcade-machine racer. And that's before you even throw in snow or rain.ĭespite the variety of tracks with different weather conditions, WRC 10 really lacks visually. With the game's car-flipping and time-ruining bumps, night races reduce visibility to the point that some of the mechanics become an unwieldy burden. For me, the tension of tight tracks during the day really lose appeal at night. Night races can be blood-boiling, as visibility takes a more grounded look. For any that expect the likes of neon lights and lens flaring headlights from the Need for Speed games, that's not what you'll find here. ![]() Then, to really put you to the test, you have night races, which place an even larger emphasis on your co-driver's directions. As you might expect with a Rally racer, you don't just drive along instead, you will need an eye for disruptive bumps, have knowledge of car performance in varying conditions, and fine-tune your sense of when to hit the brakes. ![]() Racing across its multitude of tracks, WRC 10 had my eyes glued to the screen. As you begin to understand the fundamentals of WRC 10, it becomes a far more addictive experience. With the inclusion of a Training and Test Area mode, players can take their time to get a feel for its controls and mechanics. ![]() I began to watch videos on what those agitative terms meant, and steadily accustomed myself to how the game wants to be played.ĭevelopers Kylotonn and KT Racing know that WRC 10 isn’t the most approachable, too. Replaying tracks, I came back again and again, and I trimmed second after second away from my finish time. However, I stuck with this taught racer despite struggling to remove myself from the last position on the leaderboard. Drifting and steering feel unnatural, the tracks decidedly harsh, and the aforementioned terms do nothing but continue to overwhelm. Luckily, with online, quick play, and even a split-screen mode, you can entirely ignore the game’s management career mode and get right to the racing, even if it does feel alien. Having to take rest weeks for your crew might be a part of the real-team immersion, but it just feels like a waste of time more often than not. However, the management side is an element of the game I quickly grew disinterested in. I saw flashes of interest in the number-crunching as you pick one meteorologist over the other, for example, and the game features an expansive skill tree for point collectors. After a raucous intro, WRC doesn't let off, as it then hits you with a simulation-like management system, where you’ll maintain everything within your Rally team, even down to invoice emails.Īt first glance, I was utterly horrified and often wondered, “When can I actually drive?”.įor fans of management sims and the real-world Rally Championships, this might be the perfect combination. And at the time, none of it made sense to me. The game unapologetically thrusts you into its world with difficult tracks, directionally numbered terms, and a very different style of driving. ![]() WRC 10 is an experience focused on Rally fans. Yet, as obvious as it might sound, WRC 10 isn’t concerned with racing casuals like me. Having played series like Need for Speed Heat and Forza Horizon 4, I naively approached WRC expecting a meshed experience closer to Dirt. It is a tense, tight-knit racer that you will agonize over left and right, cursing the single bumps that flip your car and trying your best to keep your foot off the pedal.Īs someone entirely new to the WRC series, such mechanics were a challenge to overcome. WRC 10, on the other hand, is all about functionality. Expansive drifts, blisteringly high speeds, gorgeous graphics, and fancy UI to watch your level fly up are staples. The popularized racers of this generation (PS4/XB1) all focus on making the driver feel cool and fast (and maybe a little furious). Yet much like the issue facing the Formula 1 games, WRC 10 is intimidating to any unfamiliar with the world of rally driving. ![]() After consulting an oracle, Andromeda’s father King Cepheus tied her to a rock on the shore, sacrificing her to appease Poseidon. This remark offended Poseidon, god of the sea, and in an act of vengeance against Cassiopeia, he set Cetus loose on the kingdom. Queen Cassiopeia, who ruled a mythical version of Ethiopia with her husband, boasted that she and her daughter Andromeda were as beautiful as the Nereids, or sea nymphs. Perseus is one of the foremost heroes of Greek mythology, known primarily for slaying Medusa and Cetus, the sea monster that guarded the princess Andromeda. By linking ordinary objects and mythology, he questions how pedestrian items can be as impactful as the divine contents of Pandora’s box. Pandora’s influence reaches into contemporary art as well Filipino artist David Medalla, for example, created Cosmic Pandora Micro-Box (2010) by collecting objects he found during a residency in Brazil, like socks, a bar of soap, and oyster shells. Redon painted the work in the years leading up to World War I, potentially drawing a parallel between the horrors inflicted by the opening of her box and those of the war. ![]() 1914, Pandora appears nude and surrounded by scores of bright flowers, yet she is intently focused on the small box in her hands. Pandora couldn’t resist the temptation and opened the box, releasing a score of plagues into the world, like disease, old age, and death.įrench painter Odilon Redon was fascinated by women from classical mythology, and he painted Pandora several times. Pandora was placed into an idyllic version of Earth, and Zeus gave her a box that he told her never to open. Zeus ordered the god Hephaestus to create Pandora to exact revenge on Prometheus. Zeus, the king of the sky and the gods, was angry with the Titan Prometheus for creating man in the image of the gods and providing them with fire that he stole from heaven. Pandora, the first woman on Earth, was created in an act of vengeance. In this comic it is made clear that Randall did know that it is possible to have a well on top of a hill, as he has drawn just one of these in the second image. Alas, that hill was San Juan Hill, And gruesome was the slaughter. Jack and Jill went up a hill To fetch a pail of water. Randall has previously composed another version of this poem, which was by mistake published in Five-Minute Comics: Part 4. Also, fracking may cause induced seismicity in the form of microearthquakes, as alluded to in the title text, which is the cause for tumbling down in the title text version. But in the comic, fracking at the bottom forces the water up, thus explaining why the kids go get water up the hill, which, as Megan points out, is messed-up hydrology. Thus water is usually found at the bottom of valleys or hills. This goes against the usual laws of hydraulics, themselves subject to the laws of gravity, which indicate that water should go down through ground cracks. In this comic, water can now be found at the top of the hill. The liquid used for fracturing usually also contains materials like sand or ceramics which, once the liquid is removed, will help to maintain the newly formed cracks so as to further allow the desired free movement of oil and gas.Ī common side effect of this method is that water levels and presence at the surface might be modified. This allows potential gas and oil to flow more freely. With enough pressure, the stratum starts to deform and crack. In these methods, highly pressurized liquids are forced into a given ground stratum (or layer). This version, which may explain why they went up the hill after water, connects the idea to hydraulic fracturing (colloquially "fracking") methods for oil and gas extraction. But fractures make the bedrock shake and Jack came tumbling down. The title text is Randall's own version, a parody of this first verse, where the names have been switched in the first and last line: Alternatively, the nursery rhyme may refer to a dew pond (which is more likely to be at the peak than a well), another concept that Megan would not be familiar with, having not grown up in the English countryside. This all said, the predominance of drawing Jack's and Jill's well at the peak, which is not the best place to put the well, makes Megan's (and Randall's) comment understandable. ![]() As an urban dweller, Megan probably gets water from city plumbing, and is not familiar with the principles of well placement that Jack and Jill grew up with. (This principle explains why water towers are used, even in cities.) Finally, artesian wells deliver water from confined aquifers, which can sometimes be as close to the surface at higher elevations as at lower ones. ![]() Moreover, since it takes more energy to bring water uphill from a well (especially in a pail), there is a long-term advantage to having wells higher than main residential areas, as opposed to lower. In times when populations were more predominantly rural, and probably when the poem was composed, "Always dig your well uphill from the outhouse" was a well-known maxim. However, Megan is probably not aware that since groundwater tends to flow in a similar direction to the slope of the land, it is often considered safer to dig a well uphill from potential sources of runoff, such as outhouses, fields, or septic systems. The groundwater table stays at about the same level over smaller areas, so building a well on a hill would require digging further. Similarly, if the water is coming from a well, then building a well at the top of a hill seems an odd choice to Megan. Thus it shouldn't be necessary to have to go up a hill to get water. The comic makes fun of the counterintuitive idea that Jack and Jill go up a hill to fetch water, because natural water sources like rivers and streams flow downhill, making them usually found in valleys rather than on top of hills. Jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after. Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water. The first and most commonly known verse is the one referenced by Jill in the comic as she says the first three lines: The rhyme dates back at least to the 18th century, one version even with 15 stanzas. " Jack and Jill" is a traditional English nursery rhyme. But fractures make / the bedrock shake / and Jack came tumbling down. Title text: Jill and Jack / began to frack. ![]() Sometimes, you just need to turn it off and turn it on again to prevent the burn message from appearing. Otherwise, reduce the liquid used if you’re using a smaller model. Double up on water for each size increase different from the recipe. A 3-quart recipe will differ from a 6-quart or 8-quart recipe in terms of liquid needed. Try to double-check which size Instant Pot model the recipe author used to develop their recipe. Give it a quick cleaning every so often to make sure even the crumbs and burnt material isn’t giving you a hard time and causing the burn message to appear. Make sure there isn’t anything stuck in between the heating element and the pot prior to cooking every time. It’s an easy mistake to make! Leaving the vent open will release liquid during quick evaporation while the pot is cooking on high pressure, so always make sure the vent is closed when cooking. If you’re cooking a one-pot meal that also contains other ingredients, try layering starchy components on top while still ensuring they are submerged in liquid. Rice and pasta will easily burn to the bottom of the pot, so ensuring that there is enough liquid is a good start. Make sure that if you need to scrape the bottom, you do so with a wooden utensil so as not to damage the pot. Otherwise, it will detect that leftover food burning once the pot reaches peak temperatures. While those brown, burnt bits on the bottom can be absolutely delicious, it’s important to wash the pot thoroughly or deglaze the pot prior to cooking with it. Otherwise, you can use the pot-in-pot method to cook those tricky components separately without having them directly touch the bottom of the pot. Don’t cook with thickeners like milk, cream, cream cheese or sour cream. ![]() Cooking with dairyĭairy is very easy to burn, so you should almost always add it after the fact. You can cut thick sauces with sugar or layer them on top of the rest of the food you’re cooking. Like with sugary sauces, a thicker liquid will stick to the bottom and cook faster than water boils. While recipes are meant to make things easier, sometimes, it takes a little trial and error on your end. ![]() Again, this may be more common with newer Instant Pots, and you don’t know if the blogger or cookbook author has an older version that their recipe works perfectly fine in. Try simply adding ½ cup at a time to mitigate the issue until it stops coming up, and make note of that in your own recipe collection. Even if the recipe only specifies a certain amount, you can almost always bypass the burn message by adding more liquid. Perhaps one of the most common issues is not adding enough liquid. If you have sealing issues time after time, I recommend purchasing a new seal ring that will fit on nice and tight. Make sure your lid is sealed tight and no steam or liquid is sputtering from the top. This will essentially mean you’re losing steam (and liquid) through the lid and the bottom is more likely to burn in short order. You’ll likely notice that your lid isn’t sealed properly prior to the burn message showing up, but if not, it can increase the chances of receiving the error. You should let the Instant Pot cool off a bit between switching functions to prevent this from happening. This may be because the pot holds more heat prior to sealing, so the bottom reaches that higher end of the temperature threshold sooner, preventing the ability to cook food once the lid is sealed. It’s also more likely to occur while cooking recipes using fewer amounts of liquid. Some users report only seeing the burn message if they first used the saute function then try to cook with high pressure. It’s also helpful to use non-sugary liquid on the bottom, and use a tomato-based sauce to layer on top so it doesn’t come in contact with the bottom of the pot. If you notice that this is a consistent issue for you, I recommend using a bit of water to cut sugary sauces with. This is likely due to the fact that sugar will caramelise and increase the temperature, especially on the bottom of the pot as crystallisation happens. You might notice that sugar-based sauces like barbecue or tomato sauce will increase the likelihood of burns.
